The vote took place during council’s regular monthly public meeting, Dec. 20, and the $5,000 total represents what they had been awarding the fuel fund prior to last spring’s grant decisions which are done in conjunction with the budget creation and approval.Diane Roberts, newly elected to council this past October but a veteran of council prior to not reoffering in 2012, was the only ‘no’ vote in regards to increasing the amount. Roberts stated she didn’t feel it appropriate to be voting against an approval by the previous council, which they made as part of passing their budget.Mayor Laurie Boucher went into some detail about how grants were awarded during the budget deliberations and told reporters, after the meeting, she did so for the benefit of staff in attendance, those in the gallery and, “especially, our new councillors.””It wasn’t made in isolation,” Boucher said, in regards to the amount originally awarded the Fuel Fund.”We’ve been getting many more applications for grants, plus our municipal demands are getting higher as far as infrastructure, programming, stuff like that, so there is give and take and council voted in favour of the budget as presented, and in favour of the grants that were given out.”I thought it was appropriate the new councillors and gallery knew the context of why that vote was taken.”Voting to amend the amount for this particular group suggests the process should be looked at, Boucher noted.”We’re going to have to look at the process for next year for sure,” she said, admitting as well that Monday’s decision opens council up for more groups coming back to revisit the amount they were given.”One thing that will come out of this is, we will have an appeals process which will, probably, be within 30 days.
